CREST Information for Nuffield Research Placement Students

Congratulations to students who have applied and received a placement on a Nuffield Research Placement.   You will have a busy and interesting summer ahead, with many new experiences with the opportunity to undertake your own research with mentors and STEM professionals who are passionate about their field.  Through undertaking your project work for your Nuffield Research Placement you are very likely to be eligible to have your project work nationally recognised through at British Science Association CREST Gold Award.

Why apply for a CREST Award?

  • It provides evidence of problem-solving skills and makes a very positive statement about abilities.
  • It can form part of a Progress File and can help with students university or employment applications - CREST Awards  is the only STEM scheme endorsed for use in the personal statement on your UCAS form.
  • Students can use them as evidence to talk about wider study and employability skills like problem solving , team work, analytical or presentation skills, self-confidence or practical skills.

How do I know if my project is eligible for a CREST Award?

Over 100 Nuffield Research Placement projects in Scotland were eligible for CREST Awards in 2015.

Lesley Weston is your CREST Representative for Scotland.  She is happy to informally chat through your project and placement and how you can gain national recognition for your research.  You can email Lesley on lesleyweston@techfest.org.uk or telephone on 01224 274348.

How can I apply?

  • Complete and return a CREST Nuffield Registration Form 2016_2.doc to the CREST Coordinator.    Lesley is happy to discuss how CREST Awards can work for you.
  • Projects are completed and students reflect on the process using the CREST Gold Profile according to the project level.
  • Students must communicate their projects to others and have the opportunity to respond to questioning.  The Nuffield report and Celebration Day are a fantastic way of doing this.
  • The student completion the projects and submits copies of profile forms and reports. You can submit either by email or mail.  Project work is precious: if mailing your work please remember to write a return address on the envelope.  We regret that TechFest is not able to pay for underpaid postal items so please ensure you use the correct postage.
  • The coordinator arranges assessment for Gold projects and may get back in touch with further questions.
  • The CREST Assessor advises on the level of award and arranges for certificates to be sent to students.

    What next?

Students with a CREST Award can join the CREST Alumni Network and connect with their CREST roots, hear inspirational stories from students attending National and International events – and from Alumni who have since gone on to have outstanding careers. You'll also be kept in the loop about other competitions, funding sources and opportunities available through the British Science Association and their other partners that may be of interest. Even better, your stories could help inspire a new generation of CREST students!

It's FREE to join the CREST Alumni Network (and quick and simple). Visit: www.britishscienceassociation.org/crestalumni to sign-up.
