Maths in the Pipeline

TechFest's Maths in the Pipeline event is designed to give S4 pupils an insight into how Mathematics applies to real-life situations within the Oil and Gas sector.

The one-day event has been running since 2005 and encourages students to engage with industry professionals from local Oil and Gas companies and use the Maths they have learned in school to solve problems tackled daily by these professionals.

Throughout the day, industry professionals offer unique and valuable assistance to the participating students in a variety of roles. Approximately 6 students attend the event from each school and these participants are allocated different groups. This is to simulate the work environment, where working with unfamiliar faces is common.

The first half of the day consists of three workshops which follow the 'oil story.' However, it is the afternoon business challenge that is the real highlight of the day - and time to test out the teamwork developed in the morning! With a deadline to meet and critical choices to be made, this is a field optimisation problem that requires accuracy and cooperation. Each team presents their solution to a panel of industry professionals who will act as assessors and give feedback on the team's business plans.
